to "sexual irregularities." The symposium part of the Crane commemoration, held at the CWRU School of Law, drew an audience of about 100, twice as many as those attending a Blossom Festival School celebration of the 75th anniversary of his birth, held in 1976 at Kent. CWRU English professor Gary Stonum, who coordinated the commemoration, gave a brief introduction. Thomas S. W. Lewis, professor of English at Skidmore College, lectured on Hart Crane and the Visual Arts. Vivian Pemberton, professor of English at the Trumbull County branch of Kent State University, followed with a slide presentation about Crane's associations with the Western Reserve.

Another 50 people were waiting in front of Freiberger when the symposium audience moved there for dedication of the statue, which McVey modeled after a photograph of Crane taken in Brooklyn in the 1920's.

In one of his rare campus appearances, CWRU president

David Ragone accepted the statue for the university.

Jim Daniels of the CWRU

Theatre department, giving a reading of Crane's poetry, made himself heard over a noisy wedding celebration across East Boulevard from the Library. Two gay persons in the audience noted the irony of a celebration of breeders disrupting a ceremony honoring a gay man.

Generally pleased with the commemoration of a gay poet, gay people at CWRU decidedly approved of the statue, noting it had the further advantage of making Freiberger Library look rather less like a factory. Some suggested it might become the nucleus of a cultural garden for gay people.

Opinion was divided about the petition, circulated at the symposium, to rename one of the streets flanking the downtown Mall after Crane. From one standpoint, this seems entirely appropriate. It was impossible to determine whether the proposal was made in complete innocence, or with a wickedly appropriate sense of humor.
